I must admit I really enjoyed the way these books are written. Full of factual information and instruction. Ray takes you on a journey of knowledge and understanding. I was gifted a copy of Ray's Wilderness Chief, this is also an outstanding read, I am slowly working my way through it. Recommend

I have a good few books about outdoor activities. I like this one because it's about the different trees that grow in England and Ireland. Ray goes into detail about what you can use the trees around us for like our ancestors did 1000's of years ago. I find it a good read worth having in your library, remember if the world goes down the swanney you can still read books unlike a kindle.

What a wonderful book! I'm so happy I could cry! See the lush meadows, brooks and streams. Look upon the magnificent English oaks standing witness since before the days of Robin Hood. The British wildlife in all its majesty and everything around us is telling us we are all connected to nature - if only we would take a few moments to listen. There is nothing like British Woodland anywhere in the world but England? - all of this and more in this incredible book. Ray Mears looks back with reverence to our ancestors and our surviving modern aboriginal friends. He takes us through an epic journey from the end of the last ice age through modern times. He shows us what it must have been like to survive and thrive even in those difficult times. He walks us through all of the different types of trees and vegetation and their usage - even fungus! Mr. Mears' writing style is wonderfully open, clear and articulate. Everything about the book is well done and very thoughtful. He uses recycled paper (an off-white stock) with a serif font for a pleasurable, easy read. The book is printed and bound in Great Britain. When was the last time you picked up something that said 'Made in England' on it? All of the pictures (and there are many), were taken by Ray Mears (no kidding) and they are beautiful! Even the close-up macro shots are by Ray. The layout is beautiful. Everything is carefully diagrammed and arranged so carefully. On the front page is a dedication to his wife Ruth - lovely. And, I feel so lucky to get a signed edition! This is a wonderful book and I highly recommend getting a hardback copy edition if you are able. It's something you can re-read over and over and treasure for the rest of your life.

A great book on British woodland, not only for its attractive presentation or its quality images; nor the lovely little blurbs on different British tree species or its safe tips on wild edibles. It is British Woodland, but related through the eyes of a person highly-skilled in Wilderness Bushcraft, and therefore, always threads of bushcraft but also history are woven into the text in a delightful and satisfying way.

This book is a must for any outdoor lover not just those that love trees. Beautifully written this book certainly shows Rays love for trees and the British countryside.

Ray has written this book in such a way that even being dyslexic I have been able to glean knowledge and enjoy the book. Thanks Ray

Very readable but does require multiple passes in my opinion due to Ray's knowledge packed style. The text is well supported with illustrations and colour plates and I particularly liked the tree by tree approach which turns the book into a very usable study guide. Yet another rich, fascinating and entertaining work - highly recommend as it definitely hits the standard I've come to expect from Ray's writing.

What I have always loved about Ray and his work is his connection to nature; he seems to work with nature, he doesn't fight it but instead coaxes it into cooperation. This book is very much a part of this approach. It is informative, well written and fascinating while remaining accessible and useful. Everything is presented in a way that encourages the reader to cooperate with the woodland so that both can thrive. It is easy to dip in and out of (I opened it at random and started reading about the Alder) and while on the one hand could be seen as a guide to living wild is really more a way of educating the reader in the 'way of the woods' and to help us appreciate their value and beauty.
