Steel Striker
- Hassle free returns within 30 days
The Steel Striker is a fantastically simple fire-lighting tool based on ancient designs. When struck with a piece of flint, the Steel Striker will give off a shower of sparks with which to ignite your charred cloth or tinder of choice. This is an excellent skill to learn as an alternative to modern fire lighting techniques, and is taught on a number of our courses.
Each striker is hand-forged exclusively for Woodlore by the esteemed British blacksmith Andrew Kirkham. Andrew has produced a number of items for Ray and Woodlore over the years, including our Folding Griddles and Ray Mears Crooked Knives.
We also sell the Traditional Canadian Steel Striker, a tool based on those used during the fur trade.

A bit small, but it does the job it was intended for brilliantly."
I purchased a Steel Striker, Wow! this works great, thank you so much for such a great piece of kit. I'll be taking on every adventure. The sparks you get from this are amazing. I highly recommend this Steel Striker to anyone who enjoys the great outdoors like me.
Best wishes
from, Mike.
There are flint strikers and there are flint strikers but I can tell you this one works. I have recently been disappointed with some lower quality strikers from ebay, some throwing very weak sparks and one or two throwing no spark at all. The cost of this one is a little higher but well worth the price when you see the bright shower of sparks it produces. Thanks for a quality item.
Beautifully made, fits perfectly into the hand, excellent ergonomics.
Good quality striker that reliably throws sparks. Appears slightly thinner than I expected but works well and fits comfortably to the hand.
Flawless, well made, easy to use and ignites tinder every time.
This Striker was more than I expected, works great with my local quartz. Hats off to the Craftsman who made this by Hand. Very Happy Customer from Pennsylvania U.S.A.
This steel striker is quite simply beautiful. It is elegant, fits comfortably in the hand and most importantly of all works extremely well. At the same time as purchasing this fire steel, I also ordered a cheaper well reviewed one from Amazon. The Amazon one works well but is not quite as good at creating Sparks, not as comfortable in the hand and not as beautifully made, in my opinion. If you want the best for you have to pay a bit more.
Just the ticket and arrived faster than a speeding bullet. Well done.
High quality, beautiful craftsmanship and works very well.
Well made piece of kit.
Thank you Woodlore for yet another great product and as usual next day delivery. This steel striker is excellent quality and creates a good shower of sparks, lit my char cloth with the first strike. I can highly recommend this product to anyone who wishes to light their fire in the traditional way.
Having had the pleasure of meeting Andrew Kirkham and observing his work close up at the Wilderness Gathering 2016, I was in no doubt this Steel Striker would be a very fine piece of work indeed. The ordering online via the Ray Mears Bushcraft site (woodlore Ltd) and prompt delivery was a hassle free experience. Highly Recommended in all aspects, I will continue to shop from this site as to date items have come in a flawed free condition and customer service is excellent.
Whatever your level of experience, you need to know where you can buy reliable and authentic gear. These steels are among the finest I have ever used. I have bought similar products from other sources which are cheaper and they fall far short. Be assured, that these steel strikers will enable you to produce the success you desire with a little practice.
Works very well, lots of sparks and with a little practice I could get a spark onto char cloth quite quickly. I would recommend this to anyone as an addition to their fire lighting kit.
I tried two previous types of striker but they both felt bulky and clumsy whereas this one is just perfect. This one is a nice lightweight but highly efficient striker. I don't have the most slender of fingers but I can fit 3 snugly into this striker and it produces a shower of sparks every time.
I looked at a few of these steel strikers from various suppliers before deciding on this one. Not having used one for 30 odd years I thought buying from Woodlore would guarantee I got a decent one, as some contain lower quantities of carbon and aren't heat-treated correctly. The morning it arrived, whilst walking to the shop at lunchtime, I noticed a halved flint stone that had been excavated from some road works; I picked it up and struck it with my new steel, it threw good sparks first time. I'm very pleased with this high quality product.
Nicely crafted - works well as you'd expect (not much to go wrong)!
Great service as always with Woodlore. Only very slight reservation is that I am sure this could be done a little cheaper, as feels a little much for what it is. Didn't stop me buying though! My choice!
Excellent piece of kit; gives very good sparks. Easy to hold and invaluable to traditional methods of fire lighting.
Thanks for the striker - am putting it to good use!
Realy good piece of kit, well made and works a treat. Highly reccomended.
Arrived less than 24 hours after ordering. This is the first steel I have owned for flint and steel fire lighting. Can positively say I should never need another. When item arrived I was straight in the back garden looking for flint to use. Man and fire! What can I say? I tried four different types of flint and it worked with them all perfectly. Two strikes to ignite char cloth, (flint was not sharp having just been liberated from the garden.) After finally preparing amadou properly I had an ember glowing in that too after only three strikes. Very very happy and satisfying to use a method of fire lighting our earlier ancestors would have used. This steel is the quality I would expect from Woodlore. It is simply a pleasure to use. Do not hesitate if you are considering purchasing; just buy it. A pleasure dealing with Woodlore. Their service and product are second to none.
I'm very happy with this striker. I threw a spark onto char cloth with the first stike. This thing gives a shower of sparks. Now I just need to perfect making charred punk wood.
Nice looking, good feel in the hand, and good sparks off a flint. Most satisfying.
Fits my hand very well! This is the first steel striker that I have bought! Risk of catching knuckles reduced to minimum by the shape of the striker! When struck on flint gives a spark every bit as easy as a ferro rod and knife! Impressed is an understatement! Would not hesitate to buy one! Have tried making my own and although it looked good it was awful at throwing a spark! This has made learning to light fire using flint and steel effortless!
My char cloth took a spark on the first strike! Lovely bit of kit, really well made and works like a dream! If you are thinking of getting into traditional fire lighting methods don't think about getting one, just get one!
This elegant little piece throws sparks like crazy from chert, jasper, and agate, which is good because we don't actually have real flint here in the US. I'm working on my Amadou. I'm going to start doing demonstrations and teach my friends.
This little steel striker seems small and basic when one first handles it. After it is put to use against quality Danish flint and char cloth one soon discovers that it throws large and hot sparks.
If this is to be your first steel striker then you won't be disappointed - it works well.
Great little striker.
Being a history buff I am a fan of flint and steel fire lighting. If you want to relive life as it was in medieval times then practice fire starting with these. The steel sits well when held and is deep in its striking surface profile allowing you to keep your knuckles intact. Having had several strikers break on me and loosing chucks out of knuckles with thin profiled strikers, I was looking for a deep profile to the striker to ensure it copes with repeated use. A steel is only as good as the quality of the flint you are using, that said I used this steel on three different types of flint and got good quality sparks and knuckles were intact throughout. I think this will be a very serviceable and long lasting item. Again making quality char cloth and or charred items like fungus are a must when using this method in order to catch those precious sparks. If you have never used flint and steel don't be surprised that it does not produce as much spark as things like the fire stick. As such practice and quality will determine how successful you are. I would have liked a slightly thicker striking surface, that said the striker so far holds up its end of the bargain well.
Excellent item and works very well. Very quick delivery.
Excellent piece of kit - well made, compact, easy to use, produces loads of sparks. Would recommend this striker without question, real quality.
