Fundamental Bushcraft with Ray Mears
A truly inspirational journey through the fundamentals of bushcraft provides a solid collection of practical skills which can be further developed. It’s the perfect place to begin your journey with Woodlore and is an extremely rewarding week, no matter your previous experience.
This is hands-on bushcraft training, not theory. Every skill has been hand-picked based on its value and practicality for wilderness travel. Ray Mears will explain and demonstrate before applied to the environment. He will guide you throughout, so you are prepared and challenged.
Essential skills you will be learning include fire lighting, shelter construction, water sourcing, natural navigation and the safe use of tools and equipment. These all-tie together to form a complete living system so you can be comfortable and competent in the wilderness.
By the end of the course, you will have built a strong foundation in bushcraft and have the confidence to apply these skills when on your own journeys.
Beyond the technical ability, this bushcraft training course shifts your perspective. As you spend time alongside Ray Mears and the team at Woodlore, you’ll gain an insight like no other. Not forgetting the friends, you make along the way as you form a tight knit group. This week becomes the start of a lifelong path of understanding and lasting, grounded connections to the natural world.

FAQs
Yes, the course is fully catered and we will happily cater for various dietary requirements, which we ask to be notified of in advance.
Yes, we carry on whatever the weather. We will obviously try to keep everyone as sheltered as possible when it is raining and some of the schedule may be altered but the course in its entirety will take place.
We are very sorry but we are unable to allow clients to bring their dogs along with them to our courses.
We do not have toilet and shower blocks at our course sites, preferring to use more simple and natural facilities. The toilet is simply a trench dug into the ground in a secluded spot, just like you would use when on a trip in the wilderness. We provide a container with toilet paper, hand gel and matches. This is a hygienic, easy and practical method. If you would like to have a shower, we have a canvas bag shower in a private area and a bucket for heating water over the fire. You may find it useful to bring some flip flops or similar to avoid getting your feet dirty while showering.

Having recently done the Fundamental Bushcraft course with Ray, I decided to wait a while to properly digest everything that happened and give a review. Having never done any Bushcraft before the course I walked in with an open mind. This for me was a life changing course in many ways. Not only do you learn many new skills that have been lost by our modern civilisation over the years but you also learn a lot about yourself and how you fit into a group of 16 new people. We may have got lucky as our group were a very diverse group of people who all had their own unique input into the overall dynamics and no doubt many of us will cross paths again on our venture into this new world. Ray has an infectious love for the outdoors and the skills it requires to thrive within it so his teachings come across in that fashion all week. He had a genuine interest in the group members and spent lots of time with us during the day taking lessons but also at night around a camp fire in a more relaxing atmosphere. Wayne the other teacher was also great and his style of teaching was the perfect balance of helping out but also letting you progress on your own using the skills youve learned. Big Rob mainly took care of all the stuff in background making sure we were fed and watered etc. I''ve came home with a different view of the world around me and a real understanding that Ive only scratched the surface of the overall genre of bushcraft and there''s lots to learn but I now have the skills and direction to go and explore. Would recommend this course to anyone 5 stars
Fantastic as always. 3rd course with RM Bushcraft and my expectations were met and surpassed. Rays knowledge, guidance and enthusiasm is infectious he makes learning a fun and challenging experience. The logistics and staff were on point, must mention Wayne, the man the myth the legend, eyes of hawk and patience of a saint, he is fantastic teacher! Thank you so much for another amazing week, I will be seeing you all again as soon as able.
I want to leave a quick but enthusiastic review for the Fundamental Bushcraft course with Ray Mears. Quick because it would be a pity to give away too many of the amazing things that make up the experience, enthusiastic because it is such a superb week, truly one of the best things I''ve ever done in my life. There were too many memorable moments to count, but the euphoria of getting the bowdrill right and making fire by friction is something I will literally never forget.
The course is very cleverly put together, structured in a way where every skill and piece of knowledge Ray and the team share is immediately useful but also dovetails with the rest of the programme so that as the days pass you move seamlessly from a tent and a catered meal on day one to a really remarkable degree of knowledge and self-sufficiency by the end of the week, with many opportunities to test and develop your skills. I learned an incredible amount in such a short space of time, thoroughly enjoyed myself, and met a really lovely bunch of people. Huge thanks to Ray, Wayne and Josh for looking after us all so well. I am already looking at which courses to take next.
If you are reading this and considering booking, I would say two things, (i) trust the kit list. It really is all you need (especially the notebook!) and (ii) do book it, now. You won''t regret it for a moment.
I took the Fundamentals course with Ray last week, and it completely exceeded my expectations. I went hoping to learn some new practical skills. What I didnt expect was quite so many new skills and a complete rewiring of how I think about living outdoors and even how some of those lessons can be brought into everyday life. The course was intense, in the best possible way. It pushed and challenged me, and Ive come away with a new mind-set, not just a new skillset. An absolutely fantastic week with a tremendous team!
A thoroughly enjoyable course. With hindsight I think the intensity and drive to complete the daily schedule was just right, although at the time I thought it was too much info in such a short period of time. The training staff came across as very affable and extremely knowledgeable in their area of expertise, always willing to take to time to explain in detail when I didnt manage to understand the first iteration. They managed to turn a gathering of individuals into a ''happy team'' willing to help and support each other. Rays input was invaluable, the feeling within the group was that we are in the company of greatness, which was wonderful.
I entered the course with a desire to learn bushcraft skills, and I received intense training beyond my expectations. Through this course I not only gained an abundance of knowledge in woodlore but also a new sense in life. I now see my life at home much simpler and straight forward and with a greater confidence that I can achieve my goals. Im thankful to the instructors James and Wayne and particularly Ray, as not only did he share his skills he also told us amazing stories of the indigenous people of the world whom he had met.
The course was everything one could hope for. Ray was a fountain of knowledge and happy to share all any of his skills. Wayne and James were also extremely skilled and approachable. The course had a great friendly atmosphere and you never felt there were questions you couldn''t ask. The support on the application of skills was great and much of the learning was through discussion and exploration. I can not recommend this course enough.
A month on it is finally time to reflect and write a review for this course. The experience exceeded all expectations, there are blogs and reviews of previous courses but none clearly articulate the experience of being on an intensive week away with someone with the breadth and depth of experience Ray brings to this subject area. I would imagine every course has a set structure but quickly evolves depending on the group, weather and experience of participants. The key to getting the most out of the course is to go in with an open mind and a can-do attitude. It is tough with long days and detailed instruction from Ray and his team, be prepared to be mentally and physically tired but have the mindset of I can and you will draw so much from the course. There was a range of experience on my course and people from all walks of life and backgrounds, it was a pleasure to meet them all, share in their experiences and support each other in this journey. Regardless of experience walking away from this course you feel like you are only at the beginning with Ray creating a solid foundation for participants to go on and develop skills. You are encouraged from day one to practice what you have been taught, to strive for quality, to keep going even when frustrated and tired. The whole experience is designed to help you reflect on your practice and to learn, every failure is a teaching point and it just goes to ensure you leave the course in a stronger position.
The Woodlore team were outstanding at every stage, Wayne and James were patient with all of us, encouraging participants at every stage to develop skills and sharing their knowledge. They were also the key for the smooth running of the course ensuring we were fed and watered throughout (the food is brilliant!) and were excellent guides in enabling all of us to take away what we wanted from the course. They were happy to share their knowledge and experience and it was a pleasure working with them.
Is a course with Ray worth the cost? I believe strongly that the experience of having quality full time instruction with someone who has dedicated his life to the pursuit of wilderness knowledge is priceless. Ray gave so much of his time in teaching and instruction as well as sitting around the fire with a mug of tea swapping stories and experiences. He was genuinely interested in our lives and why we were on the course and was a wealth of knowledge to draw upon through the week. Be under no illusion he is a tough teacher with incredibly high standards, quite rightly so, as he is teaching and preparing you for success in the vast array of skills you are taught during this week. It was a truly outstanding experience and you do walk away from it with a refreshed and renewed mindset and a greater respect for wilderness space.
The week was a truly outstanding experience and I have already changed how I approach my travel and work in the outdoors drawing on the Woodlore values that were shared on the course.
A fantastic experience, equally challenging and inspirational…I left awake and full of life.
It was an honor to be taught by Ray and to have felt connected to his own experiences, to the peoples he has met along his path, to the lineages of wilderness travel, and to the respect and beauty that bushcraft can help us perceive.
It is also a gift to feel a kinship with the people I spent a week with, and to the teachings we have all shared and grown through. I look forward with energy and curiosity to practicing what I was taught and shown during the week.
Thank you Ray for truly being present with us, teaching us the fundamentals with your passion and clarity, and asking us all to step up.
Thank you also Wayne and James, our guides. I was struck by the simplicity and effectiveness of our camp and your tuition, supporting our learning and nudging us toward self responsibility.
In short…a magical journey and a wonderful memory!
To all who are reading this, listen up!!
I have just done a Fundamental Bushcraft course with Ray, Wayne and James, its hard to write in words the extent of joy and happiness I had while doing the course and the feelings I have about it upon returning to my normal life of a painter and decorator. It was by far the best experience of my life. It exceeded my expectations a million fold!! To be on a course with big man Ray himself was just the most surreal thing ever. When people say dont meet your heroes, this does not apply to Ray or this course, hes a bloody legend and is one of the nicest people ever. He was patient, helpful and gave us so much more personal time than I thought would happen, he was great. He took the time to ask each of us about our lives and really came across like he cared. The course itself was intimate, concise and we spent three days learning the skills we needed to then go on bivvi camps for 3 days and use the skills we learnt. Im lucky that on this course it was a small group and I bonded with all the people there very closely. The assistants Wayne and James were so lovely I cant even begin to tell you, I cant imagine having wanted anybody else to have been with us now I have been with them. They were really really personable and patient, good spirited, very professional and a big big credit to woodlore. Also James makes a wicked tzatziki!! Wayne was so nice to me and I really felt he cared about all of us and wanted us all to do well, both Wayne and James were ultra ultra lovely. Diana at the office is also really lovely on the phone when you ring the office prior to going on the course, she was bright and cheery to talk to which just added to the overall amazing experience of the whole thing. If you are reading this review just pull your finger out and get on and book a course!! YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!! It has changed my life and has made me look at things differently. Im so glad that I done it, I will never ever forget it. To Ray, Wayne and James, l love you guys man!!! You have made me a better man.
It was a great week. Ray was not only sharing his deep knowledge of Bushcraft and how to use it in England but also, since Im from Sweden, gave me a lot of valuable things that I can use when I go back home.
Wayne and James took great care of us. Always there helping out and answering questions. Can strongly recommend this course to anyone who wants to learn more about Bushcraft from the best
It was an amazing week with Ray, Wayne and James. The course was better than I could have imagined. The amount we learnt was quite incredible and the (very) hard work now is going to be remembering what we learnt and putting it into practice!
If our time on earth is valuable and means anything at all, then this week with Ray and the team was a brilliant way to spend it. I have come away enriched with new knowledge and experience, seen the natural world in a deeper and more significant way. The week equipped me not just for enjoying the outdoors, but also for managing my everyday life. Wayne and James were also great people to have around and guide us through the territory and the many tasks. Everyone should do such a course if they genuinely care about the natural ecology. I also made some good pals on the course which was a bonus. It was a real privilege to spend the week with Ray, his skills, stories, generosity and encyclopedic knowledge are an asset and of enormous value to all of us. Thank you.
This is quite a remarkable course for many reasons.
Ray has an encyclopedic knowledge of the subjects and teaches in an informal and easy to understand way with both humour and passion. He is ceaselessly patient and approachable. I can honestly say I have never met a teacher like him.
The course is a comprehensive introduction to a complex subject taught fully within a forest with no access to modern tech and an emphasis on the practical. It succeeds in a way that class room based courses could only dream of. It helps individuals engage with experiences that they would never consider but in a way that seems entirely within their capability. It is a course that does push you but then that is how bushcraft should be practiced.
The skills that we obtained by the end were practiced without thinking and I can honestly say that we came out of it different people.
This is an experience like no other and I cannot recommend it enough.
Please pass on my thanks to Callum, Wayne and Ray for last week''s
Fundamentals course. Whilst very intense I really enjoyed it. The tuition
from all the instructors was exceptional, and their willingness to give one
to one help, including from Ray, was fantastic. I had been wanting to learn
bow drill for 20 years so to achieve it with personal guidance from both Ray
and Callum was a lifetime achievement and memory. Please can you also thank
them all for their efforts, it is really appreciated. Over past 12mths I
have attended 4 courses, all have been brilliant and I am looking forward to
attending many more.
In summary:
This course was fantastic and the sort of experience that is very rare now. We learnt a huge number of skills, but more than that, it was a chance to learn another way of thinking and being. We could finally take the time to really focus on a task, and methodically work through challenges, whilst taking the time to savour success. In normal life, we are constantly bombarded with distractions and competing priorities, so it was a relief to be able to step away from that for a week. I''m finding that mentality a great help going forwards in our chaotic world! I am very much looking forward to honing my skills, using them on my expeds, and am excited to attempt the Journeyman''s course in the future. Truly an inspirational and immensely satisfying week- I feel so many potential experiences have now been unlocked for me!
Some more detailed points:
Pre-course admin was great with a comprehensive kit list.
Hopefully this won''t be relevant for much longer, but it was conducted in a very Covid-secure manner, with hygiene a top priority.
I really appreciated the lessons taught by Ray. There really is no one else with his experience, authority and level of expertise so it was well worth it in my eyes to attend a course taught by him. His wife Ruth was also a star, giving us women some great extra tips, as well as her perspective from her extensive experience.
Having said that, the assistant instructors were very diligent and patient, and clearly also very proficient. Top class teaching.
The course was challenging, as being outdoors always is. This was not a leisurely camping trip but nor was it a thrashing. There was always another task to accomplish, but we were given plenty of time to proceed at our own pace. I would say that if you are looking for something super relaxing, or indeed super arduous, this may not be for you. If you are buying this as a present- check that the recipient is up for it first!
The syllabus was extensive, with lessons on carving, crafts, fishing, snaring, identifying plants, shelter building, good kit recommendations, cooking, finding water, knots, and fire starting. By the end you really had a good breadth of basic skills.
If I had one quibble it would be that I think I would have preferred that once a skill had been demonstrated, that we all sat in a circle to make our first attempt, whilst the instructors circulated to correct errors. I think the (probably Covid-induced) method of us going away to practice alone or together meant that a bit of time was wasted unknowingly repeating basic errors. However the instructors were very generous with their time and patiently talked through each skill when I asked them to individually.
The food we were provided with was great- I won''t spoil it but don''t worry, you get more than hard tack and gruel!
The other participants were a great bunch, very friendly, team-orientated, and good-humoured! They all had varied backgrounds, and it was great to learn from them.
This course is extraordinary! The instructors including Ray are patient and attentive with as much contact time as you ask for. If youre struggling with any of the enormous syllabus covered they are always available for a one to one. The rations are excellent and an education in themselves in terms of what to take on bivouac. I dont want to say much more as it would spoil some of the surprise, suffice to say they will not disappoint. My only criticism would be that so much is covered it is difficult to find time to consolidate before moving onto the next subject but Im choosing to view that as my activities over the next months! Be prepared for highs, lows, frustration and elation but a truly memorable and emotional week for me. Thanks to all the instructors for an amazing week - this is an experience I wont forget and your love of nature and bushcraft really does shine through.
Perhaps the first question anyone reading this would be: is it worth the extra money to be taught by Ray?
If you want to be taught by and pick the brains of an accomplished Woodsman who does not rest on his laurels; teachings by experienced instructors of humility and a natural ebullience for bushcraft; to push yourself out of your comfort zone and create a new more comfortable comfort zone; to spend six nights in a fine ancient woodland with like-minded people from all walks of life; to learn the rudiments of Bushcraft on the hoof, you will love this course.
The course was redesigned this year due an illness that has been going around. You may have heard about it?
We were informed of a much tougher course this year.
There were certain things omitted and many things added, and the teaching was spread over three groups of four people, whereas in previous incarnations I believe it had been just the one group. This change reduced the teaching time per group since the lessons had to be repeated three times and staggered over the same six-day time period. There were gaps in schedules, this flexibility was vital to the success of course.
I was expecting only one instructor, namely Mr. Mears, (since I was told by a friend a Scout Covid Risk Assessment allows for a bubble of up to 15). We had 4 instructors including Ray, which offset the teacher to student ratio favourably.
The course actually morphed into the ''survival'' end of bushcraft, since we were provided with our own personal food and water instead of the normal communal eat. There was no recourse for showering contrary to what was stated in the course information and ''downtime'' was reduced to our own groups.
A lot of the course, at first appeared to be conducted ad hoc. We were left wondering what next? However, there was a method in the madness and the modules tied together fairly well in the end. Some demonstrative teachings lost their potency due to distancing making certain things harder to learn.
On the final afternoon our group had 3 lessons in succession, this was particularly stressful for some of us. Learning while tired and out in the bush is requisite for our development and these things just have to be overcome, however I was barely coherent, this just compounded the stress further. It was emphasised that it is all ''part and parcel'' of survival in the bush. You agree and just get on with it!
Since the course, my times out in the wilderness have been better prepared and the acquired skills have served me very well.
Ray''s teaching is thorough and always on point. The course redeemed itself for me through the magic of Ray. Ray is saturated with knowledge, approachable and generous with his knowledge at whatever scale. So to go full circle, my answer to the first question is a resounding "Yes!"
Good Afternoon to The Woodlore Team and Ray,
I have spent almost a couple of weeks now reflecting on my recent course with you. I have wanted to let the experience settle in my mind and give my thoughts time to formulate before I responded as this has been an important milestone in my own personal development and as such has a reasonable level of importance for me.
Firstly, may I say thank you and well done for all your efforts to provide the course under what I know have been challenging circumstances and which I could see required a high level of additional effort from all of you to be able to deliver it. It was much appreciated, you did a brilliant job with all the elements of admin, organisation, and physical care before and during the course. Your standards are exemplary and I felt I couldn''t have been in better hands. Which for me is a really important aspect to attending a course like this. I started my journey with Woodlore in 2017 with an introduction course and then my first fundamental course. Prior to this experience I had never even slept outdoors before, in any capacity, never tied knots, cooked outdoors, never held a knife to do ''jobs'' with, and certainly not to attempt anything meaningful with, I had never made a fire, or in fact experienced any outdoor or wild living, my upbringing and life up to date never allowed or afforded me any possibility of these things. But I really want to, I want to learn and be able to use the skills. My aim on attending the course was to learn outdoor, wild living and survival skills. With fresh eyes and with no prior knowledge or experience I felt it was vital that I get the highest level of training first time around so I can lay a solid, firm foundation of skills that won''t lead to bad habits I would have to unlearn later. This last course with you Ray has been enlightening. It challenged the very core of what I felt about myself, what I may be capable of, what I can yet do, yet become. The talks we had Ray, the thoughts you shared with me and the guidance and support you imparted have illuminated my vision of myself and I thank you for taking the care and concern to give of yourself, it mattered and it is valued.
All the team worked so hard and gave so much, it was clear to me that all of you extended yourselves over and above to ensure the course was a success. You did it. Thank you to you all.
I appreciate that I am not a ''model bush-craft student'' and I struggled in some cases and in many things - sorry about the book ! However, I have heard it said about many things that it is not often natural ability that leads to success, but yet instead the tenacity, persistence and perseverance that makes it through in the end..... I will see you again I''m sure.
Kind Regards
Ali Pickett
To say I enjoyed it is an understatement, I absolutely loved every minute of it. Even at 4am while I was feeling a little chilly in my leaf litter shelter in the woods! The course was an amazing experience, I was constantly challenged and feel I have learnt some amazing skills making me so much more confident in the outdoors.
I would like to thank you for all your help leading up to the course, and please pass on my heartfelt respect and thanks to David, Steve, Wayne and of course Ray for their undivided attention throughout the week. Every single lesson was delivered so professionally and in an enjoyable way that made the learning challenging and fun. They were fantastic, and I felt they handled the social distancing elements of the course incredibly well. I know it was a first for them, and as much of a learning experience in delivering the course in a different way to how they have in the past. It was a very effective way of helping us to all learn to rely on ourselves in the wilderness. It is a shame that we never all got to sit round a campfire in one big social group, but that did not take away from my experience of the course at all.
Receiving my certificate in the post yesterday was a very exciting moment.
I fully intend to follow this up with the Journeyman course at some point in the future.
Once again, thank so much to all at Woodlore, it is a fantastic company and I wish you all the very best in the future.
