In the modern day, preparation is key. The world around us changes day by day and in order to live comfortably and safely, we must stock up on essentials.
The UK Government recently released the ‘Be Ready’ campaign. This is designed to help households build an emergency kit to help manage in the event of everyday disruptions including power outages, severe weather or burst pipes. Think of these essentials as the same way you would check you had enough fuel for a long journey or that you had an umbrella just in case it rains.
Whilst the current climate can feel uncertain, this kit advice isn’t a warning sign. One can never be too prepared and in the likelihood something happens, you will wish you had your kit available. 72 hours worth of essentials is recommended as this gives enough time to support basic everyday needs whilst things return to normal.
Let's discuss the core components of the household emergency kit:
1. Water
Burst water mains or infrastructure failures can lead to lack of water supply. These instances can mean water supply is completely disconnected or water becomes contaminated and unsafe for human consumption.
To combat this, it is advised to store at least 3 litres of water per day per person in your household emergency kit according to the ‘Be Ready’ campaign. If you still have water supply but there are potential issues with the quality, water purification tablets are a great solution. At Woodlore, we stock Katadyn Micropur Forte MF 1T Water Purification Tablets or the SawyerSqueeze Water Filtration System, which are just a few options to help keep water safe.

One key note is that water should be correctly stored once filtered. Stainless steel water bottles are an eco-friendly and more hygienic option. These water bottles are completely toxin-free and don't retain or impart flavours. No matter how many times they are filled, or what is put into it, these water bottles keep drinks fresh and clean tasting.
2. Lighting
There is nothing worse than experiencing a power outage and being left in the dark trying to scramble for a light source. Having torches or headlamps, along with plenty of spare working
batteries in your household emergency kit, can make all the difference.
Torches are a much safer alternative to candles, particularly around pets or children.

3. Signal & Communication
We communicate with others constantly in the modern day but in the event of signal loss, phones may not be the solution. Apart from discussing a safe meeting point with family or neighbours, you may need ways to communicate.
Whistles are a great tool to help in these scenarios. They are loud and instantly capture anyone's attention. The Fox 40 Micro Whistle reaches up to 110 decibels and is incredibly reliable as it will not freeze or jam due to having no moving parts. It is waterproof and small enough to fit into pockets.
The government also includes windup or battery operated radios as part of the ‘Be Ready’ campaign. This allows you to tune into and listen out for announcements and advice via news
channels.

4. Basic First Aid
A key note on the 'Be Ready' campaign’s household emergency kit list is first aid. It is a basic requirement to any kit list, whether out in the wilderness or at home.
The first aid kit should include:
- Waterproof plasters
- Bandages
- Thermometer
- Antiseptic
- Eyewash solution
- Sterile dressing
- Gloves
- Medical tape
- Tweezers

Tweezers are an underrated essential as they help to remove foreign objects from the body to prevent them burrowing into the skin or getting infected. Splinters can be caused by moving wood and wounds from shifting debris.
Another first aid tool that we recommend is a splint. They are excellent for stablising injuries and
helping to transport individuals from danger. The SAM Splint is utilised by military medics, athletic trainers, ski patrols, veterinarians, wilderness rescue teams and safety engineers. The
splint also folds flat for easy storage within the first aid kit.
5. Warmth
With the loss of heating supplies and gas, temperatures can drop quickly. Storing bivvy bags and sleeping bags means warmth can be retained. This helps individuals remain vigilant and safe in these circumstances.
At Woodlore, we specialise in essentials that keep people safe, warm, and sustainable in the outdoors but these products are not limited. Keeping 72 hours worth of essentials under the ‘Be Ready’ campaign can be a game changer during everyday disruptions.

Whilst many will never need to take action, keeping a supply will never go a miss. Stay prepared
and make sure to replenish any supplies every so often.
Build your household emergency kit and be ready for whatever may come your way with Woodlore.
